Skeletal muscle atrophy, also known as muscle wasting, is one of the largest unsolved problems in human health. By reducing strength and endurance, muscle atrophy limits activity, interferes with normal activities, makes people more susceptible to falls and illnesses, and delays or prevents recovery from illness and injury. In its later stages, muscle atrophy causes frailty, debilitation, loss of independent living, and increased mortality. Muscle atrophy also contributes to metabolic problems and can create a vicious cycle of immobility and further muscle atrophy. These issues have major impacts on both health and quality of life.
In addition to being very serious, skeletal muscle atrophy is very common, affecting about 60 million people in the US alone. Its causes include aging, malnutrition, immobilization (e.g. limb casting, bed rest, many neurologic disorders), critical illness, many chronic illnesses (e.g. diabetes, cancer, heart failure, COPD, renal failure, cirrhosis, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV/AIDS), and certain medications (e.g. cancer chemotherapy, glucocorticoids and anti-androgen prostate cancer therapy).
Emmyon’s natural dietary compounds act on skeletal muscle and inhibit muscle atrophy at the molecular level. These compounds comprise a new class of nutritional supplements and functional food ingredients for healthy aging and to improve nutritional support during chronic illness, hospitalization and rehabilitation.
